Holiday Shipping Deadlines: When to Order for On-Time Christmas Delivery

Ground services close about a week before Christmas Eve and economy international in late November. Computed ship-by dates for USPS, UPS, FedEx, Amazon and international across the 2026, 2027 and 2028 seasons, plus the method so you can date any year yourself.

Holiday shipping deadlines are the most searched shipping topic every November and December, and every year people miss them anyway. The reasons repeat: ordering too late, assuming express is still available on Christmas Eve, and not realising that a service quoted at five days can span nine on the wall calendar. Rather than reprint a carrier press release that expires in January, this guide gives you the deadlines for three seasons and the method to work out any season yourself.

Why Holiday Shipping Is Different

During peak season, roughly Thanksgiving through Christmas, UPS, FedEx and USPS handle three to five times their normal daily package volume. Delivery networks run at absolute capacity, and that changes what a quoted transit time actually means:

  • Express services that guarantee next-day delivery the rest of the year may run one to two days late
  • Economy services that normally take three to five days may take seven to ten
  • The earlier you ship, the more margin you have when something slips

On top of the volume problem sits a calendar problem, and this is the one that moves the dates every year. Three things decide a holiday deadline, and only one of them belongs to the carrier.

Where Christmas falls. A Friday Christmas leaves Thursday 24 December as the last delivery day. A Saturday Christmas gives you Friday the 24th. A Monday Christmas pushes the last practical delivery back to Friday the 22nd, because the 23rd is a Saturday and the 24th a Sunday. That single fact moves every deadline below by up to two days.

Where the weekends land. Transit is counted in business days, so a five-day ground service can span nine calendar days when a weekend sits in the middle. The gap between the quoted number and the calendar is where most missed deliveries come from.

Where Thanksgiving falls. The US holiday moves between 22 and 28 November, and the shopping surge behind it lands squarely on the economy international deadline. In some years that deadline arrives before the Black Friday sales have finished.

The method, in one line

Take the last weekday on or before 24 December. Count your service transit backwards in business days, skipping weekends and public holidays. Your ship date has to be a weekday too, because you cannot hand a parcel over on a Sunday. The dates in this guide were produced that way for the 2026, 2027 and 2028 seasons.

One caution before the tables. These dates are the calendar ceiling: the last date that works if transit runs at its published speed. Peak volume routinely pushes transit past that, and carriers publish their own seasonal cutoffs each November that are usually a few days earlier for exactly that reason. Treat the dates below as the absolute limit, then ship two or three days sooner.

If you are working from an older guide that lists First Class Package Service, that service no longer exists. USPS retired it on 9 July 2023 and folded it into Ground Advantage along with Retail Ground and Parcel Select Ground, so the ground row above is the one that applies.

USPS Deadline Note

These are recommendations, not guarantees. USPS makes no delivery guarantee on any service except Priority Mail Express. Build in at least two to three extra days of margin during the holiday rush, and treat Ground Advantage as the service most likely to slip when volume peaks.

UPS Ground transit also varies with distance. A parcel crossing two zones may clear in three days while a coast-to-coast shipment takes the full five, so the ground row is the worst case rather than the typical one. These dates assume early morning drop-off at a UPS location; a late-afternoon drop can cost you a day.

FedEx SameDay sits outside the table because it does not run on transit days at all. It collects and delivers the same day, which makes it the only option that still works on Christmas Eve itself. Availability is limited to certain lanes and the cost is high enough that most people use it once and never again, but it exists when nothing else does.

Notice that all three carriers close ground on the same date. They quote the same five business days, so the calendar treats them identically. If you remember one date each season, make it the ground date.

Amazon Holiday Ordering Deadlines

Amazon updates delivery estimates in real time at checkout, and that estimate beats any published cutoff because it accounts for the specific item, the fulfilment centre holding it, and current capacity. Always check the date shown for your address before ordering rather than working from a general deadline.

  • Prime free two-day: generally reliable through 22 December
  • Prime free same-day: 23 December in eligible areas
  • Amazon typically emails holiday ordering deadlines to Prime members in late November

Two exceptions catch people every year. Marketplace sellers shipping their own stock fall outside Amazon's fulfilment promise, so the estimate reflects that seller's handling time instead. And anything marked as shipping from overseas belongs to the international deadlines below, whatever the domestic cutoff says.

International Orders: Order Months Earlier

If you are expecting gifts from international sellers, whether AliExpress, Etsy international, Temu or SHEIN, the deadlines run weeks ahead of the domestic ones:

Economy international is the deadline that ruins Christmas, and it lands in the final days of November across all three seasons, within a week of Thanksgiving in each case. Standard shipping from Europe or the UK sits a little later than shipments from China but still inside late November on economy services.

Never rely on economy international for holiday gifts

The window for economy international shipping is too uncertain during the holiday season. Peak volume, customs queues and airline capacity all compound on the same route. If the item matters, order by early November at the latest, or pay for an express service.

One component sits outside every figure here: customs clearance. These dates cover carrier transit only. A parcel selected for duty assessment can wait days, and December queues run longer than the rest of the year. If your order is dutiable, add a buffer on top.

The pattern worth memorising

Across all three seasons the ground deadline lands between 15 and 17 December, and the economy international deadline between 28 and 30 November. Those two windows hold whatever day Christmas falls on, because the transit times behind them do not change. If you remember only two dates each year, make them those, then check the exact day in the tables above.

Last-Minute Options If You Have Missed the Deadlines

  • Upgrade at checkout. Moving from ground to two-day buys about five calendar days, and ground to overnight about six. The gap between the ground deadline and the overnight deadline is a shipping option, not a lost cause.
  • FedEx SameDay is expensive with limited availability, but it delivers on 24 December.
  • USPS Priority Mail Express is available at post offices on most days and carries the only USPS delivery guarantee.
  • Amazon Same-Day Delivery covers eligible products in eligible areas through 23 December.
  • Local retail and Amazon Lockers for same-day pickup, which no shipping deadline can beat.
  • Digital gifts such as emailed gift cards, streaming subscriptions and game downloads arrive instantly and have no deadline at all.
  • Ship deliberately late. Late-December rates drop and networks quieten, so a parcel sent after Christmas meets fewer exceptions than one fighting through the peak.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the last day to ship USPS for Christmas delivery?
Ground Advantage closes on 17 December 2026, 16 December 2027 and 15 December 2028. Priority Mail runs to 21, 20 and 19 December in those seasons, and Priority Mail Express to 23, 22 and 21 December. These are recommendations, not guarantees: USPS guarantees delivery only on Priority Mail Express, so add two to three days of margin.
What is the last day to ship UPS or FedEx for Christmas delivery?
Both carriers close ground on 17 December 2026, 16 December 2027 and 15 December 2028. Three-day services run to 21, 20 and 19 December, two-day air to 22, 21 and 20 December, and overnight to 23, 22 and 21 December. UPS dates assume early morning drop-off, and ground transit varies with distance.
When should I order internationally for Christmas delivery?
Economy international closes 30 November 2026, 29 November 2027 and 28 November 2028. Express international runs to mid-December. Never rely on economy international for a gift that matters, because peak volume and customs queues compound on the same route. Order by early November or pay for express.
What are my options if I missed the holiday shipping deadlines?
Upgrade the shipping option at checkout first, since overnight runs almost a week later than ground. Beyond that: FedEx SameDay delivers on 24 December where available, USPS Priority Mail Express is sold at post offices, Amazon Same-Day covers eligible areas through 23 December, local retail and Amazon Lockers need no shipping at all, and digital gifts arrive instantly.
How do I work out the shipping deadline for any Christmas?
Take the last weekday on or before 24 December, then count your service transit backwards in business days, skipping weekends and public holidays. Your ship date has to be a weekday too, because carriers do not collect on Sundays. A five-day ground service therefore closes roughly a week before Christmas Eve, and an overnight service the day before. That method works for any year, including seasons beyond the three in this guide.
Why do the deadlines change every year?
The calendar changes, not the transit times. Christmas falls on a Friday in 2026, a Saturday in 2027 and a Monday in 2028. A Monday Christmas is the tightest of the three, because the 23rd is a Saturday and the 24th a Sunday, so the last practical delivery day drops back to Friday 22 December and every deadline moves two days earlier.
Does Amazon guarantee Christmas delivery?
Amazon shows real-time delivery estimates at checkout, and that estimate for your specific item and address is more reliable than any general deadline. Prime two-day is generally dependable through 22 December and same-day through 23 December in eligible areas. Marketplace sellers shipping their own stock fall outside that promise.

Dates were computed by counting business days backwards from the last delivery day of each season, skipping weekends and public holidays, with ship dates restricted to weekdays. They represent the calendar ceiling at published transit speeds. Carriers publish their own seasonal cutoffs each November, usually a few days earlier to absorb peak volume, so confirm with the carrier for anything that must not be late.
