How to Return Online Orders: Retailer Windows and Duty Refunds

Return windows and free drop-off options for Amazon, Walmart, SHEIN and AliExpress, plus how to reclaim the import duty most people never claim back when they send something across a border.

Return policies vary by retailer more than almost any other shopping variable. Kohl's drop-offs let you return Amazon packages without a box or label. AliExpress refunds usually don't require a physical return at all. Knowing the quirks of each platform before you buy sets the right expectations.

Track Your Return Package

After dropping off your return, enter the return tracking number on ParcelsZen to confirm it reaches the retailer.

Return windows at a glance

The window is the thing that decides everything else, and it is rarely the number the retailer advertises on its front page. Every major retailer runs tiers, and the tier your item falls into is set by category rather than price.

The detail that costs people money: Amazon counts from delivery, Walmart counts from purchase. On an item that took a week to arrive, those are two different deadlines, and the Walmart clock has already been running while you waited.

Amazon Returns

Amazon's policy is one of the most generous in retail, and the mechanics changed materially in 2026 in ways that work in your favour.

The window is 30 days and it starts on the delivery date, not the order date. Individual listings can differ, and the item page states the applicable window before you buy, which is worth checking on anything expensive or seasonal.

How to start one: Your Orders, then Return or Replace Items, select a reason, print or display the label, and drop off.

The free options are the point. Amazon's drop-off network passed 10,000 US locations in March 2026 with the addition of FedEx Office nationwide, which puts a box-free return point within a short drive of most of the country:

  • Kohl's drop-off: no box and no label needed, hand over the item and a QR code
  • Whole Foods and Amazon Fresh: same box-free process
  • Amazon Locker: for items that fit, available around the clock
  • UPS Store and FedEx Office: label printed for you at the counter

Third-party sellers used to be the weak point and no longer are. Since February 2026, all US seller-fulfilled orders must use Amazon's Prepaid Return Label programme, so a marketplace return no longer depends on the seller posting you a label or answering messages.

Where fees still apply: some large, heavy or third-party items deduct return shipping from the refund, and the listing discloses this before purchase. Free returns are the norm rather than a guarantee.

Refund timing: typically 5 to 7 business days after the drop-off scan. Choosing a refund to Amazon gift card balance is often instant once the return is scanned, which is the fastest route if you intend to spend it there anyway.

Walmart Returns

Walmart's headline is 90 days, and the headline is true for most of what people buy. The exceptions are where returns go wrong, because they are category-based and considerably shorter.

The four Walmart tiers

90 days: clothing, shoes, furniture, mattresses in original packaging, home goods, toys, sporting goods, garden equipment.
60 days: contact lenses, prescription glasses and hearing aids, receipt required.
30 days: most consumer electronics, including computers, laptops, tablets, cameras, camcorders, drones, e-bikes and scooters, PC components, vacuums and portable heating or cooling appliances.
14 days: wireless phones.

How to return: in store, bring the item and your order confirmation to any Walmart, and most items need no repacking. Online, start on Walmart.com, choose Return by Mail, print the free label and drop off.

The holiday extension, and the catch inside it. Items bought between 1 October and 31 December are returnable until 31 January. For electronics the clock does not simply extend, it restarts on 26 December, so a television bought on 15 November runs to roughly 25 January rather than expiring in mid-December. Two categories are excluded from the extension: wireless phones keep their 14 days, and air mattresses keep 15.

Marketplace items follow different rules. Third-party sellers on Walmart.com set their own terms with a 30-day minimum, and some charge a restocking fee of up to 20% on opened or non-defective goods. Check the "Sold and shipped by" line on the listing before you buy, not after. If a Marketplace seller refuses to honour its own stated policy, Walmart customer service can intervene.

No receipt: Walmart will usually issue store credit at the item's current selling price, and a valid government ID is required for returns above $10.

SHEIN Returns

SHEIN allows one free return per order within 35 days of purchase.

How to return: Go to your SHEIN account β†’ My Orders β†’ Returns β†’ select items β†’ generate label β†’ drop off at USPS.

  • First return from an order is free; additional return packages from the same order incur a fee
  • Refunds go to your SHEIN wallet (instant) or original payment method (5-10 business days)
  • Items must be unworn, unwashed and carry their original tags
  • Commonly excluded: underwear, swimwear, bodysuits, jewellery, cosmetics and anything marked final sale

The wallet-versus-card choice is worth a moment. Wallet credit lands immediately and card refunds take up to ten business days, so if you are replacing the item anyway the wallet is faster. If you are not, take the card refund, because wallet balances only spend in one place.

Track Your Return

AliExpress Returns

AliExpress returns are the most complicated due to international shipping costs. Most sellers don't accept physical returns from international buyers because return shipping often costs more than the item.

The reason is arithmetic rather than policy: returning a $12 item to Guangzhou costs more than the item, so the platform settles with money instead of logistics. That works in your favour if you understand the dispute system.

How refunds actually work on AliExpress:

  • Item never arrived: Open a dispute for 'Item Not Received' and you will get a refund without returning anything
  • Item not as described: Open a dispute with photos, and AliExpress often grants partial or full refunds without requiring return shipping
  • Changed your mind: You typically won't get a refund without paying return shipping, which often costs more than the item
  • Partial refund offers: sellers frequently propose keeping the item for a partial refund. Accepting closes the dispute, so only accept when the figure is genuinely worth it
  • Escalate if the seller stalls: an unresolved dispute can be escalated to AliExpress, which then decides on the evidence submitted
File Disputes Promptly

AliExpress buyer protection has a deadline, typically 60-90 days from order date. File disputes before this window closes or you lose your refund eligibility.

International Returns Tips

Cross-border returns follow a different economic logic to domestic ones. The retailer is weighing the cost of getting the item back against its resale value, and on low-value goods that maths almost always favours refunding you and writing the item off. Knowing which side of that line your order sits on tells you what to expect before you ask.

  • Returning items internationally is generally cost-prohibitive unless the retailer provides a prepaid international return label
  • Most Chinese sellers (AliExpress, Temu, SHEIN) handle refunds without requiring physical return for low-value items
  • If a European or UK retailer requires physical return, use the cheapest tracked international service available for small items
  • Ask before you post. Sending an item back without an agreed return authorisation frequently means it arrives, is refused, and nobody refunds anything. Get the instruction in writing through the platform message system so it is on record
  • Declare it correctly on the customs form. Mark the parcel as a returned item rather than a sale. A return declared as a commercial shipment can attract duty on entry at the other end, which the seller may then deduct from your refund
  • Keep the customs and duty paperwork for anything you return across a border. Import duty and VAT are often reclaimable, and the claim depends entirely on being able to prove what you paid and that the goods left the country. See the section below.

Reclaiming the import duty you already paid

If you paid duty or import VAT on something arriving from abroad and then sent it back, that money does not come back on its own. The retailer refunds the purchase price. The duty sits with the customs authority until somebody claims it, and most people never do because nobody tells them it is claimable.

The rules differ sharply by destination, and in one case they changed recently in a way that closed the easiest route.

The UK is where a consumer is most likely to actually recover money. Returned Goods Relief covers both the duty and the import VAT, which on a GBP 200 order can be a meaningful sum, and HMRC accepts claims directly with proof that the goods left the country. Alcohol and tobacco are excluded.

The United States is the hardest. Duty-free treatment for returned goods now applies to commercial shipments only, and postal returns were removed from eligibility. On a commercial return the correct classification has to appear on the invoice, and the party that paid the duty at entry is the one who can claim. For a consumer who paid a carrier's brokerage bill at the door, the realistic route is asking that carrier or broker to correct the entry rather than filing anything yourself.

Keep the paperwork before you post the parcel

Every route above needs proof that the goods actually left the country and evidence of what was originally paid. Keep the duty or brokerage invoice, the original order confirmation, and the return tracking number showing an export scan. Photograph the customs label before it goes. Claims fail far more often on missing documentation than on eligibility.

One thing worth deciding before you start. On a small order the duty may be less than the return postage, in which case the sensible answer is to keep the item or accept a partial refund from the seller. Reclaiming is worth the effort on higher-value goods, on anything faulty where the longer UK window applies, and whenever the retailer has provided a prepaid return label so the postage costs you nothing.

When a Retailer Won't Accept Your Return

Escalation options:

  • Credit card dispute (chargeback): If you paid by credit card, dispute the charge with your bank. This is a strong option for non-delivery or significantly not-as-described items.
  • PayPal dispute: If you used PayPal, open a dispute through the PayPal Resolution Center.
  • BBB complaint: File a complaint with the Better Business Bureau or your state's consumer protection agency for US-based retailers.

Quick Reference: Returns by Retailer

Track your return shipment on ParcelsZen to confirm warehouse delivery. Keep the drop-off receipt until the refund actually appears, because it is your proof of return if anything gets lost in transit and you need to push for the refund manually.
