Royal Mail International Services: Which One Is Your Package Using?

Royal Mail offers several international shipping tiers that affect both speed and tracking quality:

• Royal Mail International Standard: Compensation cover is up to £20, and tracking to the delivery point comes with International Tracked, a separate service. Transit time to USA: 7-21 days.
• Royal Mail International Tracked: Full tracking with detailed scans from UK origin to USPS delivery in the USA. Tracking numbers start with letters followed by digits and end in 'GB' (e.g., RX#########GB). Transit time to USA: 7-10 days.
• Royal Mail International Tracked & Signed: A document service only, tracked with a signature on delivery. For goods to the USA, Royal Mail offers Tracked and Standard options.
• Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed (domestic UK only): Fastest domestic Royal Mail service, not used for international.

Will Your Number Still Work in the US?

Yes, and that is the single most useful thing to know before your parcel crosses. Royal Mail international numbers are 13 characters ending in GB, for example RX#########GB. That format is an international postal standard, which is why USPS recognises the identical number once it takes custody. You will never be issued a separate US tracking number, and you do not need one.

The format is: two letters, nine digits, then the country code GB. Thirteen characters in total. The two opening letters tell you which service was used, and the last column is the one that matters once your parcel crosses.

The first letter is the service class under the international postal standard. R means registered, L means tracked, U means an untracked letter-post item containing goods, V means insured, E means express. That single character tells you whether anyone will scan your parcel after it leaves Britain, which is more useful than the nine digits that follow it.

The one check worth doing before you wait: if your number does not end in GB, it is not a Royal Mail item at all. UK sellers frequently ship via Evri, DPD or Parcelforce and describe it loosely as Royal Mail, and those carriers use entirely different formats that will never resolve on the Royal Mail site no matter how many times you try. Royal Mail Tracking Status Updates

'We've received your item at [location] and it's on its way'

Royal Mail has collected the package from the sender. This is the first confirmed tracking event.

'Your item left our international hub'

The package has departed from Royal Mail's international sorting centre (usually Heathrow or East Midlands). At this point, it's on its way to the USA.

'Your item is on its way to [destination country]'

The package is in international transit. No further Royal Mail updates until it arrives in the USA.

'Your item has been received by the postal operator in the destination country'

USPS has received the package. From this point, keep using the same Royal Mail tracking number.

'Delivered'

Package has been delivered. USPS will show the delivery details including time and location.

The Royal Mail to USPS Handoff

This is where many US customers get confused. When a Royal Mail international tracked package arrives in the USA, it is handed to USPS for final delivery.

What actually happens at the handoff is a change of custody, not a change of number. Royal Mail flies the consignment to a US International Service Center, USPS accepts it into its own network, and the same 13-character number is recognised by both systems because it was issued under an international standard both carriers use.

The gap in the middle is the part that alarms people. Between the last UK scan and the first US one, several days can pass with no update at all. The parcel is on an aircraft or waiting to be entered into the USPS system, and neither carrier reports during that window.

What happens hour by hour once it lands

Your parcel arrives on a commercial flight into a US gateway airport and is moved to an International Service Center, a joint USPS and CBP facility where inbound international mail is presented for customs processing. There are four: New York, Miami, Chicago and Los Angeles.

You are routed by arrival airport, not by your address. A parcel addressed to Florida can appear in Chicago, and the city in the status line tells you nothing about where it goes next. This is the single most misread scan on the whole journey.

At the ISC the parcel is scanned into the USPS network, presented to CBP, then either released for domestic transport or held for assessment. Several days at an ISC is normal rather than a problem, because high inbound volume, a customs queue and the induction into domestic mail all happen in the same building.

Why US buyers get the wait wrong

The silence is not the flight. The crossing itself is a matter of hours. What fills the gap is everything either side of it: 12 to 36 hours at the UK hub waiting for a departure slot, then 12 to 48 hours at the US end before the parcel is inducted and scanned. That is why the last UK scan and the first US scan are typically two to four days apart on a parcel that never stopped moving.

Royal Mail has released it and USPS has not yet entered it, so neither system is reporting. Nothing is lost during that window and nobody can tell you where it is, because at that moment it is genuinely between two databases.

Once USPS has it, USPS rules apply. Delivery timing, redelivery after a failed attempt, held mail and the delivery scan all follow USPS practice rather than Royal Mail's, which is why the tail end of the journey feels different from the start. If your parcel is showing US scans and something goes wrong after that point, USPS is the carrier to contact and Royal Mail cannot help you.

What that changes practically: a Royal Mail parcel that reaches your local USPS facility is still international mail, and USPS lists international mail items as not eligible for its Delivery Instructions service, so do not count on redirecting it.

How Long Does Royal Mail to USA Take?

• Royal Mail International Tracked: 7-10 business days to USA (during normal periods)
• Royal Mail International Standard: 7-21 days (wide window that varies significantly based on customs, USPS routing, and volume)
• Peak periods (November-December, post-holiday January): Add 5-10 additional days
• Cheaper parcels up to 2 kg may go by Royal Mail International Economy, which aims to deliver to North America in up to 6 weeks

Those windows start at dispatch, not at checkout. A seller who takes two days to post adds two days you will not see in any tracking event, and on handmade or made-to-order items that gap is often longer than the transit itself.

The economy-service trap is worth knowing about before you buy. International Economy aims to deliver to North America in up to six weeks, so a wait that long is within Royal Mail's aim and is not a fault or a lost item. If a seller is quoting a low postage cost, ask which service they are using before assuming it will arrive in a fortnight.

Where the time actually goes on a US-bound parcel: one to two days from collection to the UK international hub at Heathrow or East Midlands, one to two days at the UK hub and in the air, one to three days at the ISC for customs and USPS induction, then USPS delivery timing on top of all of it.

The transatlantic flight is rarely the slow part. The two handling stages at either end usually are, and the ISC stage is the one that varies most because it depends on inbound volume that day rather than on anything about your parcel.

Customs Between the UK and USA

All shipments from the UK to the USA go through normal international customs procedures.

• The $800 duty-free allowance was suspended in 2025, so a UK parcel is now assessable regardless of value
• What you owe depends on the tariff classification of the item and where it was manufactured, not on how little it cost
• UK sellers are required to complete CN22 or CN23 customs declaration forms that list each item's description, value and country of origin, which CBP uses to calculate any duty due
• If your package is delayed in US customs, USPS will usually update the tracking with 'Arrived at ISC' followed by a customs hold notation

What that means in practice for a UK order. Duty is decided by what the item is and where it was manufactured, not by how little it cost. A British-made item and a Chinese-made item bought from the same UK shop can attract different rates, because country of origin means the place of manufacture rather than the place of posting.

On Royal Mail parcels the bill comes from the seller, not from CBP. Royal Mail pays the duty to CBP and the seller collects it from you at checkout, while couriers commonly collect from you before release and add a handling fee on top. If a parcel is being held pending payment, that charge is normally the reason.

Returns do not refund duty automatically. If you send a UK purchase back, US Customs drawback can refund 99% of the duty you paid on an item that was defective, not as ordered or sent without your consent, if it leaves the US within 5 years of import. Keep the paperwork before you post it back.

What to Do If Your Royal Mail Package Is Late

Royal Mail's worldwide delivery aim for International Tracked is 5-7 working days, but this is not a guaranteed service window. If your package has not arrived within 25 days of posting, you can:

1. Contact the seller on Etsy, eBay, or their website and ask them to open a Royal Mail inquiry
2. Open a dispute on the platform you bought from (Etsy, eBay, PayPal all have buyer protection)
3. Contact USPS if the package shows as received in the USA but not delivered

The sender can claim compensation from Royal Mail only after the due date plus 25 working days for destinations outside Europe, such as the US.
